The band changed its name several times. The first name picked by the group was ‘Feedback.’ However, in the year 1977 the band altered its name to ‘The Hype.’
Later the band decided on the name – ‘U2’ because of the abstractness and multiple interpretations associated with it.
The band was signed by Island Records in 1980. ‘11 O'Clock Tick Tock’ was the first single of the band that was internationally released.
‘Boy,’ the first album of the band came out in 1980 and received optimistic reviews.
The album contained the song ‘I Will Follow,’ a hit single from the UK.
The second album of the group was – ‘October’ that came out in 1981. However, this was a sad phase for the band as two important members – Bono and The Edge dropped out from the band.
They faced deep religious conflicts and went separate ways. For a brief period, the band went out of sight.
The next album -‘War’ was one of the most radical and politically motivated albums of those times.
The variation in their musical tone was experienced in the album that followed. It was called ‘The Unforgettable Fire.’ This album was marked for its ambiguity and abstract feel.
The album that came next – ‘The Joshua Tree’ won the group two Grammy Awards and also made the band hugely popular.
