Located right in the center of East Village, Webster Hall is New York’s landmark nightclub and an entertainment venue. The renowned architect Charles Rentz built it originally in 1886, and it was quickly hailed as America’s first modern nightclub. In the early years, it was a place graced by the celebrating elite of New York. The Hall had seen Emma Goldman of the Anarchist philosophy, and patrons as famous as Marcel Duchamp and Joseph Stella, the painters.

During the Prohibition era, it was rumored that the Webster Hall was owned by the infamous Al Capone, and was probably the reason why local politicians and police ignored the happenings and merrymaking there. Over the years, the venue had hosted a host of concerts and performers, featuring such diverse artists as Tito Puente and Tito Rodriguez, and folk artists Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie, among many others.

The acoustics were of such high quality that RCA Records made it their East Coast recording venue, with Carol Channing recording Hello Dolly, and Harold Prince recording Fiddler on the Roof. Other great stars that have recorded at Webster Hall include Julie Andrews, Elvis Presley, Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, Harry Belafonte, and Frank Sinatra – a formidable list, indeed.

In 1992, the Webster Hall had a re-birth through the aegis of the Ballinger Brothers, who restored the 40,000 square feet landmark nightclub to its former glory. The original color scheme was recreated, and there was a fusing of the past with the state-of-the-art audio, video, and lighting technology. The concert hall soon became a venue fit to cater to a party of 2,000, or an intimate do for a 100.

No wonder that personalities from the world of entertainment, such as Madonna and Mick Jagger, and Bill Clinton opted for the venue for their special media events. The popular New York City concert hall also gained reputation as New York City’s top live music venues, enhancing its renown as the premiere nightclub.

AOL’s New York Broadband Rocks series uses Webster Hall exclusively for its live music. In one particular year, eminent artists, such as Usher, Avril Lavigne, Evanescence, Joss Stone, Good Charlotte, Nelly, Duran Duran, Franz Ferdinand, Alicia Keys and Prince, among many others, have performed live on the stage of the Hall’s Grand Ballroom.

You enter through its grand foyer, in anticipation of the things to come. The Marlin Room is a dance hall filled with songs of the 70s, 80s, 90s; The Grand Ballroom, with a fantastic stage, is the greatest of all dance floors in New York City.
