If you are in the search of some West Side Story NYC tickets, this is the right place to start your search. Before we move on to the different ways to book the tickets, let’s learn some more about the famous musical- The West Side Story.

The Timeless Musical Play - West Side Story

West Side Story NYC is based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The original play was set in the 1950s. The story of the play revolves around the street gang operating on the West Side of the city. Tony is the protagonist and Maria is his lady love. Maria is the sister of one of the gang leaders (Puerto Rican Sharks) and Tony is a member of another gang (The Jets) operating in the city.

The story like all Shakespearean plays has a perfect start when all seems to be fine for the lovers. Slowly, things begin to change and take an ugly turn when Tony accidentally kills Maria’s brother. Followed by an explosive neighborhood clash of passion, fear and music, the play sees a dramatic end.

West Side Story - The History

Jerome Robbins, the director of West Side Story NYC proposed the idea of writing the musical version of the Shakespearean play in 1949. Back then, the story was to be titled ‘The East Side Story’. But, due to other commitments, the project was shelved, and it was only six years later that the project was reopened. Now the idea incorporated in the play included two teenage warring gangs- one of them ‘The Jets’ who were a group of some self-styled Americans and the other a newly arrived group of Puerto Ricans.

It took a year and a half for the production and the lyric composition to complete and rehearsals for the play commenced soon after. The first stage version of West Side Story opened in 1957 in Washington DC followed by the musical opening on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theater. The play ran almost 750 performances. The film version of the play was released on October 18, 1961.
