Adaptation Of Romeo And Juliet

West Side Story is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s, Romeo and Juliet. The idea for West Side Story revival first came to Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein and Arthur Laurents. They wanted to make a musical version of Romeo and Juliet. They wanted it to be a love story of a Jewish boy and an Italian Catholic girl. They called it the East Side Story.

However, the project was shelved for six years. And when they came back to the project the idea of a romance between a Jewish boy and an Italian Catholic girl no longer seemed socially relevant. Instead, they came up with an idea of star crossed romance, between a native born Polish boy and newly arrived Puerto Rican girl. The book was written by Arthur Laurents.

The Story

West Side Story is set against the backdrop of gang wars in the streets of New York in 1950. The musical is a love story of Tony and Maria. Tony belongs to the American Jets gang, while Maria is the sister of the leader of rival gang - Sharks.

The West Side Story revival tells this beautiful ill-fated love story through its music and dance. Leonard Bernstein’s music has enchanted audiences for decades. Through the songs and dance movements you get to feel what the characters are feeling. For example, in the song and dance sequence, “Somewhere” we get to feel, how Maria and Tony feel when they escape from their grim reality to a world of their dreams.

The West Side Story revival marked a turning point in American theater. The musical’s extended dance sequences, sophisticated music, dark theme and focus on social problems were all new to the American theater. This timeless musical, has managed to enchant theater lovers for decades, mainly because it has such a great story, music and choreography.
