West Side Story Tickets and Show Information for Broadway
BELOVED MUSICAL RETURNS AFTER A THREE DECADE ABSENCE! The classic American musical that hasn’t been seen in almost thirty years returns to that stage promising to be more modern than ever. West Side Story will begin previews at the Palace Theatre on February 23, 2009 with an official start date scheduled for March 19, 2009. The current production appears to have an edgier vibe than the original 1950’s production and will offer a whole new generation a chance to experience this timeless love story. The same legendary score by the award winning team of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim will set the pace for this contemporary day Romeo and Juliet. West Side Story tells the tale of star crossed lovers Tony and Maria who are caught between rival street gangs in New York City. Tony, a Polish boy and a member of the Jets falls in love with Maria, a Puerto Rican girl whose brother is a member of the Sharks. Set in the 1950’s on the turbulent streets of Manhattan’s West Side/Hell’s Kitchen section where the violence seems to be escalating between the gangs the young lovers must decide how they can live in peace with one another. The Book was written by Tony award winner Arthur Laurents who will also direct the production. The story is beautifully told through the amazing music which portrays not only a love story but a community in turmoil. The score includes such beloved and unforgettable songs as “Maria”, “Tonight”, “Somewhere” and “America”. The dance sequences in the production are like no other and were hailed as groundbreaking for its time in the 1957 production. That production ran for two years and played 732 performances inspiring a 1961 film adaptation which went on to win ten Academy Awards including Best Picture. The last time this show was seen on the Great White Way was in 1980 and starred Debbie Allen in the role of Anita. The current production will star Josefina Scaglione in the role of Maria. She is an Argentinean classically trained opera singer. She played the role of Maria in 2008 at The National Theatre in Washington D.C. Playing opposite her in the role of Tony is Matt Cavanaugh who is best known for starring in Urban Cowboy, Grey Garden and most recently A Catered Affair. The cast also features Karen Olivo and George Akram. West Side Story is just one of those shows that you absolutely have to experience for yourself. The music and the dance sequences are so mesmerizing that you will be left breathless. You become so enthralled with these two lovers that you can’t help but root for them and hope that somehow they will get there happily ever after.
