West Side Story is a timeless Broadway musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s, Romeo and Juliet. The musical is set in 1950s, street gang riddled New York City. With the latest Broadway revival, the musical will surely capture the hearts of theatre goers.

With Kevin McCollum, James L Nederlander, Jeffrey Seller and Terry Allen Kramer in the production team of West Side Story, the musical will enjoy another great run at the Broadway.

The musical stars, Josefina Scaglione as Maria. Miss Scaglione is a classically trained opera singer who has been seen in number of musicals in Argentina.

Matt Cavenaugh plays Tony in the latest Broadway revival of this great musical. Cavenaugh, made his Broadway debut in Urban Cowboy and since then we have seen him in musicals like, Grey Gardens and A Catered Affair.

Karen Olivo, who plays Vanessa in “In The Heights” plays the role of Anita in West Side Story.

The Story

The musical is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. This is a musical about the love story of Maria and Tony. Both of them belong to rival gangs, the American Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Maria and Tony meet, and fall in love.

Since both belong to rival gangs, they have to carry their love in great secrecy. The famous balcony scene in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is replaced with a scene on the tenement fire-escape. Here, we are treated to the best score- “Tonight.” Their love is so strong that they even go through a mock marriage, which they take very seriously.

However, like Romeo and Juliet, their love is also doomed here. Tony accidentally kills Maria’s brother. She is ready to forgive him and even decides to elope with him. However, before the two lovers unite, an avenging shark kills Tony.

This realistic portrayal of social problems is what makes the musical so unique. Another unique feature about this musical is its dance. The dancers are required to carry many dramatic actions in their dance movements. The movements are used to portray the inner feelings of the characters. In fact, we do not find such emphasis on movements in any other musicals.

Great Music

Its music is another positive point. Leonard Bernstein’s score has enchanted audiences for decades. “Maria,” “Tonight,” “I Feel Pretty,” “One Hand, One Heart,” “America,” “Somewhere,” and “Jet Song” are some of the most popular scores of West Side Story.

The scores effectively catch the grim reality of New York’s slum life. However, at the same time, they have so much poetry and beauty that they touch our souls.

This great musical, is a must watch for all theatre lovers. It is one of the best Broadway experiences that you will ever have.
