Wicked Basic Facts
The musical theater show Wicked opened on Broadway October 30th 2003. The story is based on the novel "Wicked by author Gregory Maguire and the book written by Winnie Holzman . Based on the "Land of Oz" before Dorothy has arrived, focusing more on the characters of the Witches.
Running time is 2 hours and 30 minutes with one 15 minute intermission
Wicked Storyline
Wicked is a Broadway theater musical which is considered the "prequel" to the original "Wizard of Oz". The story line is a bit deeper then that however, focusing more on the American perception of good and evil while going into deeper layers and using the musical score to create a deeper drama. The story gets into the characters before Dorothy ever arrives to the land of Oz.
While the musical is based on the novel, it does not follow the book very well at all, instead it focuses on the more dramatic sections and characters of the original storyline. Many would think straying from the novel would destroy the integrity of the theater experience, but do to the talents and genius of Stephen Schwartz and his direction, moves the Broadway experience into a new and fascinating area.
Focusing mainly on the two witches Elphaba and Galinda who are very young and friends from school. Elphaba is the a very nice intelligent and slightly mistaken women. Galinda is more or less the opposite, considered the popular beautiful one who comes off very snobbish and petty.
The friendship begins to grow and they decide to take a trip to the "Emerald Forest" where they quickly are introduced to the "Wizard of Oz". The wizard seems to have a different plan for them in life and in a bit of a creepy way steals them away from home to send them into a life of "witchhood"
Ephalba becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, while Galinda becomes the good witch and close friend to the Wizard, often helping him as an ally through all the events of the Emerald Forest.
This musical adventure has many twists and turns, often keeping the viewer fascinated and interested in every last detail of the characters involved. How two unlikely friends meet and journey to the Emerald forest, only to become so seperated by the forces of good and evil.
In a little over one year on New York City's Broadway, the huge hit musical Wicked made a $14 million dollar opening year.
The grosses for the musical are reaching or going over $1 million ticket sales every week in the 1933 seats Gerswhin theater, thanks to the help of rave reviews, general interest and word of mouth. The show is taking in revanues higher then any other New York Broadway theater event.
Wicked, which is being advertised as the untold story of the witches of Oz, has become a must see event for the New York City Broadway theater savvy, as well as many people who have never seen a Broadway musical show in their life.
It is sure to make a believer out of anyone who goes to see this fascinating journey of love and friendship. As one reviewer said "It is sure to touch your heart"
