MAY THE FORCE BE WITH BROADWAY!
The Roundabout Theatre Company presents Carrie Fisher in Wishful Drinking. This comedy will begin previews at Studio 54 on September 22, 2009 and will officially open on October 4, 2009. The show is based on Fisher’s best selling memoir of the same name and is being directed by Tony Taccore. This one woman show delves into the life and experiences of the actress who beat the odds and lived to tell about it.
The self-described “daughter of Hollywood inbreeding” tells her not so glamorous story of her life in the business. The daughter of Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds became a cultural icon when she starred as Princess Leia in the Star Wars trilogy at the tender age of nineteen. She reveals tales from her life; her parents divorce, her failed marriages, the Star Wars fame, affairs and struggles with alcoholism. The show strives to show that life isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be and sometimes not all of the money or material objects a person possesses can’t make them happy. Sometimes what the public sees isn’t always what is really going on in a star’s life.
The show debuted at Los Angeles’ Geffen Playhouse and has since played at in Berkeley, Boston, Washington D.C. and Seattle Repertory Theatre. Fisher is a diverse actress whose career has spanned the decades and includes roles in television, theater and film. In addition to Star Wars her other film credits include roles in Shampoo, The Blues Brothers and When Harry Met Sally. She has also had guest appearances in several television series including Frasier, Smallville, 30 Rock and Family Guy. She made her Broadway debut in 1974 playing in the ensemble of Irene which starred her mother.
Wishful Drinking is a unique opportunity to get a glimpse into the life of a Hollywood icon as she tells her story first hand. Humor and comic relief helps tone down what might otherwise be a rather depressing story of struggles and hardships. The show is on a strictly limited engagement and is scheduled to close on January 3, 2010.
