Xanadu The Musical On Broadway
Wed & Sat 2pm
Tue Through Sat 8pm
The show is a 1980 romantic musical film directed by Robert Greenwald. The name of the film is inspired from the poem "Kubla Khan, or A Vision in a Dream. A Fragment", written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. You will find the poem mentioned in the film. Xanadu is the Chinese province where Kubla Khan creates his beautiful pleasure garden in the poem. Xanadu on Broadway has an impressive star cast including Olivia Newton-John, Michael Beck, and Gene Kelly. The music is composed by Newton-John, Electric Light Orchestra, UK pop idol Cliff Richard, and the San Francisco-based art-rock band The Tubes. The music became very popular with the audience. The film also has some ground-breaking design features.
In Xanadu the Musical on Broadway, Michael Beck playing the character Sonny Malone who is a talented artist dreaming of recognition beyond his job, which is painting bigger versions of album covers for the purpose of record-store window advertisements. The film begins with Sonny being broke and demotivated. He is on the edge of giving up his vision. He had quit his day job with the intention of making a career as a freelance artist. He fails at that attempt and does not make money at it. So Sonny has to return to his old job at AirFlo Records. After a few amusing confrontation with his authoritative boss and opponent Simpson, he gets back to painting record covers.
As a part of his job, Sonny is asked to paint an album cover having a beautiful woman on it. Coincidentally, it is the same woman who has bumped into him earlier that day, kissed him, and then roller-skated away. Sonny becomes fanatic about finding her. Instead she finds him and says that she is Kira (played by Olivia Newton-John). Sonny is totally in the dark about the real identity of Kira. She is in reality, one of the nine mystifying and stunning women who literally came to life from a local fresco near the beach in town.
Sonny becomes friendly with a ‘disbanded’ big band orchestra leader named Danny McGuire (played by Gene Kelly). Danny has lost his muse in the 1940s. And Sonny has not yet found his muse. It is Kira who encourages these two men to create a partnership and start a nightclub called Xanadu. Kira falls in love with Sonny. But this creates a problem because she is in reality Terpsichore, the Muse of dance.
The Muses supposedly visit Earth in order to inspire earthlings to pursue their dreams and wishes. But in this case, Kira has broken the rule. She has fallen in love with Sonny. Her job was to only inspire him. Thus, Kira’s parents, Greek gods Zeus and Mnemosyne, call her back. Sonny confesses his love for Kira and vice versa. The movie ends with Kira and the Muses performing to a packed house for Xanadu's gala opening. After that they return to the kingdom of the gods in an impressive manner. The movies ends with a subtle twist which you must watch instead of me revealing the ending.
