ONE WOMAN PLAY CREATES THEATRICAL MAGIC!

Tony award-winning actress Vanessa Redgrave takes to the stage in a one woman stage adaptation of Joan Didion’s 2005 best selling autobiography. The Year of Magical Thinking opened on Broadway at the Booth Theatre in March and is scheduled to run for a strictly limited engagement of twenty-four weeks. This new production chronicles one woman’s struggle with the process of grief and mourning, and how she deals with being the one left behind.

“Life changes fast, Life changes in the instant. You sit down to dinner and life as you know it ends.” These are the author’s words that seem to set the tone for the entire play. While Joan Didion’s only daughter lay in a coma her husband of forty years has a massive coronary attack at the dinner table and dies. Didion’s life as she knew it would never be the same. She found comfort and was able to deal with her world changing in an instant through what she describes as “magical thinking”. The play, a detailed examination of grief, is a love letter to her daughter who later died, and a tribute to her wonderful marriage. It is a first person account that takes place the year following her beloved husband’s death.

Ms. Redgrave has earned critical acclaim and several awards for her work on the London stage. Her Broadway shows include The Lady from the Sea, Orpheus Descending and Long Days Journey Into Night for which she won a Tony award for her performance. Ms. Redgrave is no stranger to the big screen either; in 1978 she received an Oscar for her supporting role in the film “Julia” and has been nominated for five other Academy Awards. This impressive actress brings much talent and experience to this unique role. The author of the play, Joan Didion, is a regular contributor to The New Yorker and The New York Review of Books. She has written five novels and eight nonfiction books.

The main theme of the play is how does one deal with grief and its process? The show captures the courage, compassion and humor of this extraordinarily amazing woman as she is faced with the first year without the man she has shared the past four decades with. Life, for her, has gone from ordinary to the unthinkable in a matter of minutes. The Year of Magical Thinking is a heartbreakingly beautiful story of those who are left behind and what they must do to survive that unbelievable time in their lives. This is not your typical Broadway show and is better suited for those looking for a more serious, thought provoking night at the theater. If you decide that this is something you would like to see don’t delay as it is scheduled to close in August of 2007.

The Year Of Magical Thinking tickets are selling on average for around 50.00 dollars with premium seating reaching over 100.00 dollars. The Year Of Magical Thinking tickets are not frequently selling out for the majority of shows.
