A Chorus Line, the record breaking Tony Award winning musical, with a 15 year continuous run on Broadway, is back. The musical which first previewed on April 16, 1975 at the Off-Broadway theater, The Public Theater, then known as the Estelle R. Newman Theater, opened on May 21, 1975. It previewed at Broadway’s Shubert Theater on July 25, 1975 and opened on October 19, the same year, and became the longest running show in the history of Broadway, with its 3389th performance on September 29, 1983. It continued its excellent performances until it closed on April 28, 1990 after 6,137 performances, and 15 years.

A Chorus Line, with nine Tony Award nominations in 1976, and having won nine of them for: Best Musical, Best Musical Book, Best Musical Score, Best Actress (Musical), Best Featured Actor (Musical), Best Featured Actress (Musical), Best Director (Musical), Best Lighting Design, Best Choreography, made a great comeback at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, by previewing on September 18, 2006, and opening on October 5, 2006.

The Show

This first revival of the hit Broadway musical presents the audition of the young men and women – those faceless dancers - who perform behind the stars, and are never in the spotlight. It showcases their joy, despair and triumph, as these 17 dancers audition for a chance to become members of an eight-member Broadway chorus.

What is overwhelming is that this musical became one of the most popular musicals on Broadway, despite the fact that it ran contrary to all Broadway musical conventions. Contrary to what one expected from the extravaganza of a Broadway musical, A Chorus Line has no scenery, no great costumes to boast of, except the performers in leotards, and had a setting of a plain and uninteresting theater. A Chorus Line on Broadway gives a glimpse of the personalities of the dancers, what shaped their lives, and what made them decide to become dancers.

The 17 dancers talk about their hometowns, their families, friends, lovers, about their careers and their ambitions. They share their innermost and most intimate feelings – some stories funny, some heartbreaking.
