The Jersey Boys National Tour commenced on December 10, 2006, in San Francisco. The show is the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons – a group of working boys who became the largest doo-wop hit of all time. You must buy Jersey Boys tickets to Broadway if not for anything than to pay homage to Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito, and Nick Massi, who came from very modest beginnings but successfully ended up in the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame.
The Four Seasons was originally formed in 1961 with Frankie Valli, known for his falsetto vocals, as the lead singer. They released their first hit, “Sherry”, in 1962. The group had over twenty-five top forty hits and sold 175 million records. The Four Seasons, also included Tommy Devito, Bob Gaudio, and Nick Massi wrote all their own music. Their Italian American style is what set them apart from other pop groups of their time. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, and Valli still continues to tour performing many of their classic hits. The group’s sound and style are credited with influencing the Jersey Shore scene in the 1970s and 1980s.

The production opened to rave reviews. Right from the time it was reviewed at the August Wilson Theater on October 5, 2005, and opened on November 6, 2005, it received an overwhelming response. No single member of the cast was disappointed. Right from its beginning to its end, the show is as spectacular as it is incredible. This is one of those ‘must see’ shows you just have to see. If any musical on Broadway deserves a standing ovation – this one is the one.
Other than Christian Hoff, who plays Tommy DeVito of The Four Seasons, the other three – Daniel Reichard, J. Robert Spencer, and John Lloyd Young, who respectively play Bob Gaudio, Nick Massi, and Frankie Valli, are debutants on Broadway, and all four deserve all the applauds and accolades that have come their way.
More Jersey
A lethal skyline emerges over the stage, along with the walls of a chain-link fence tower. But it was very much here, on the not-so-beautiful but certainly musical streets of an Italian district in North Jersey, that a gangster turned guitarist, Tommy DeVito, and a bassist with a harmonious touch, Nick Massi, tried to form a musical band. They put Jersey on the musical map. Director Des McAnuff had done a fabulous job along with all his actors. The story is penned down deftly by Marshall Brickman (of Annie Hall fame) and Rick Elice. Right from the beginning, the show dealt with clichés like brawls over money, problems with the missus, and the like. Nevertheless, the amazing Jersey flavor of the show really makes it difficult to avoid. The band’s stumble from fame does not come with the typical velour tracksuits and Percocet but with much more fascinating mob debts and strange battles over bathroom towels.
The actual strength of the show lies in the music and songs. McAnuff made sure that he extracted the true potential of the band. Some super hit numbers like the show stealer “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”, “Walk Like a Man” and “Working My Way Back to You”, is really feet-tapping and groovy. The entire star cast deserves a standing ovation. Yes. They are that good. Be it the critics or the general audience – no one can complain of any flaw in their performance. All of them put up a show that is really laudable. Christian Hoff plays the character of Tommy DeVito. Before starring in Jersey Boys, he was known for his acting prowess in another musical called ‘The Who’s Tommy’. Daniel Reichard plays Bob Gaudio. He made his entry to Broadway with Jersey. Before that, he was a popular face in off-Broadway’s Forbidden Broadway and ‘The Thing About Men’. J. Robert Spencer portrays the character of Nick Massi. For him too, Broadway is first. John Lloyd Young plays the character of Frankie Valli brilliantly. He too is a first on Broadway. But no one can tell that he is not a veteran from the way he acted. The play is based on the book written by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice. Bob Gaudio is the man behind the melodious music that is at par with the storyline and theme. The lyrics are penned by the very talented Bob Crewe. All credits go to Howell Binkley for providing the appropriate lighting.
