Off Broadway Comedy

History :: Now Playing :: Schedule :: Reviews

This smash hit comedy opened off-Broadway in October of 2004 at the Westside Theater where it has been playing to sold-out audiences ever since. Before coming to New York it played a sixteen month sold-out premiere in Los Angeles where it still holds the record for that city’s longest running comedy. Critics are raving about Jewtopia. Phil Blazer of The National Jewish News boasts, “Move over Mel Brooks! There’s two new Jews in town.” And Bernard Weintraub of The New York Times declares it is “One of the Biggest and most improbable Hits!”

The production centers around two friends, Adam Lipschitz and Chris O’Connell, who are in search of the loves of their lives. The story is about getting Adam the Jewish guy married to a nice Jewish girl of his mother’s dreams, and to help Chris, his Catholic friend, become Jewish enough to find a Jewish bride. Chris believes that if he marries a Jewish girl his life will be easier because she will make all the decisions for him. To help expedite these tasks the two come up with Jewtopia an internet service for Jewish singles.

The play was written, produced and stars two first time playwrights; Brian Fogel and Sam Wolfson. The story was born from a fifteen minute comedy sketch about two former neighbors who meet at a Jewish singles mixer. The success of their stand up routine prompted Fogel and Wolfson to make that sketch the first scene in a full length comedy. The pair put everything on the line, even maxing out their credit cards, to get this show up and running. Obviously, it worked out for them considering the shows off-Broadway record. The production made back the initial investment of $625,000 after just twenty weeks in New York. In 2006 the two also wrote a book entitled “Jewtopia: The Chosen Book for the Chosen People.” They are also in the process of shooting a movie based loosely on the play.

Most of the plays humor comes from jokes about Jewish stereotypes. So, if you don’t find that offensive and are in the mood for a good laugh then this is the show for you. Apparently, this production has something since it is currently the longest-running off-Broadway non-musical comedy.

Jewtopia Broadway tickets are selling on average for for 65.00 dollars with premium seating selling for higher prices. The show has become a populare Off Broadway hit and sells out regularly so Jewtopia Broadway tickets may be difficult to obtain last minute from the box office.
