Nearly nine years later, on June 13, 2006, it moved to the newly refurbished theater – the Minksoff Theater - making way for Mary Poppins, another great musical from Disney. Though tickets can be available from its box office, they are not so easy to come by. The Story
By creating this powerful musical that brought to life its classic 1994 film, Disney produced such extravaganza never seen on Broadway, or for that matter, anywhere else. The musical is rich in African mythology and rhythms, with giraffes strutting about, birds swooping, and gazelles leaping. With a cast of over 40 actors creating high drama, it has made The Lion King a production unlike any Broadway has ever seen.
Directed by Julie Taymor, The musical on Broadway has sold out every single performance right from the time it opened, and is so popular that every weekend until the middle of 2007, is fully booked. This Broadway’s production of Disney’s The Lion King, despite showing not a single human on stage, had been nominated for 11 Tony Awards in 1997, of which it won 6 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Scenic Design of a Musical, and Best Choreography. In addition, it won more than 25 awards in 1998 – the year after it opened. This musical features five songs composed by Elton John and Tim Rice for the original Disney film. In addition, it has additional African and South African music. Getting Seats And The Theater
Before moving the production to the Minksoff Theater, which is on the third floor of the Viacom office building, it was fully refurbished. It took 200 craftsmen and artisans six months to complete the job. The Minksoff Theater with its Proscenium stage has a capacity of 1597.
The Theater, run by the Nederlander Organization, has a box office through which The Lion King tickets can be obtained, on cash, or with Visa card, American Express card, or the Mastercard. The Lion King tickets for such a popular show are very difficult to obtain from the box office. After standing for hours in the line, you are still not sure of laying your hands on the tickets of your choice.
