Learning About New York City Theater Tickets
New York City is a city of entertainment and theatrical performances. Any visitor to must see at least one theatrical performance to consider his visit successful. There are three basic categories of theatrical performances in New York City: Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway. At peak times and when certain shows are ‘hot,’ obtaining New York City theater tickets are near impossibility. There are ways to obtain them, of course. One of them is to approach a Broadway ticket broker, who can arrange premium seats for you for the play or show of your choice.
Classification Of New York Theaters
Broadway refers to the ‘Theater District’ in midtown Manhattan, in and around the Times Square. Its name is globally popular and is synonymous with the shows and plays staged on its thirty-nine specially designated venues in Manhattan. These theaters have a seating arrangement from 500 to 2000 seats. The price of the Broadway tickets for the Broadway shows and plays are the most expensive, and are booked months in advance, through the box office.
People buy tickets for Broadway shows from a number of other sources, the most popular being through ticket brokers.
Off-Broadway theaters are smaller than the theaters on Broadway and normally have a seating capacity ranging from 100 to 499 seats. There is no special Off-Broadway district and many Off-Broadway theaters are located in, and around, the Broadway theater district. The Actors’ Equity Association (AEA), which governs the classification of New York Theaters, defines Off-Broadway as “any theatre located in an area bounded by Fifth and Ninth Avenues from 34th Street to 56th Street and by Fifth Avenue and the Hudson River from 56th Street to 72nd Street.” Such a theater should not have a seating capacity of more than 499 seats.
Off-Off-Broadway theaters are smaller than the theaters in which the Broadway and the Off-Broadway shows and plays are performed. Off-Off-Broadway shows are performed in theaters that have a maximum seating capacity of 99. There is no Off-Off-Broadway district and such theaters can be found all over in “storefronts, office buildings, residential brownstones, basements, public schools, bars, nightclubs, community centers, churches, and a variety of converted industrial and commercial spaces such as banks, warehouses, factories, and libraries.”
Buying Your New York City Theater Tickets
Obtaining show tickets is not an easy job, especially for popular events. Though most of the shows are booked months in advance, people who know, know where to get them from. There are a number of sources to buy your tickets for the show of your choice, such as from re-sale forums, through eBay, and even from scalpers – when you are desperate enough. These sources are risky as you are not sure that you are not being scammed.
One legitimate way to obtain your New York City theater tickets is through licensed Broadway ticket brokers, who are capable of obtaining premium seats for the show of your choice, and at the time you wish to. To view a huge selection of New York City theater tickets click the link!
