The Actors’ Equity Association (AEA), which governs the classification of New York Theaters, defines Off-Broadway as “any theatre located in an area bounded by Fifth and Ninth Avenues from 34th Street to 56th Street and by Fifth Avenue and the Hudson River from 56th Street to 72nd Street.” Such a theater should not have a seating capacity of more than 499 seats. Off-Off-Broadway theaters are smaller than the theaters in which the Broadway and the Off-Broadway shows and plays are performed. Off-Off-Broadway shows are performed in theaters that have a maximum seating capacity of 99.
