Yes! It Has Come Back

Les Misérables has a long history of 6,680 performances on Broadway behind it. Its revival - with previews that started on October 21, 2006 and opened on November 9, 2006 - is for a special limited six-month engagement up to April 22, 2007. After running for more than 16 years on Broadway, this Boubil and Schonberg’s legendary musical has made a comeback that has been warmly accepted.

Les Misérables - which has been seen by more than 53 million people worldwide, in 38 countries and in 21 different languages, since its opening in London in October 1985 – made its debut on a Broadway stage on March 12, 1987 at the Broadway Theater. This well acclaimed musical was nominated for twelve Tony Awards in 1987, and won eight of them for: Best Musical, Best Featured Actor, Best Featured Actress, Director of a Musical, Book of a Musical, Score, Scenic Design, and Lighting Design.

From the 1,752 seat Broadway Theater, where it debuted on Broadway, Les Misérables was moved to the smaller 1,412 seat Imperial Theater on October 17, 1990. With its 6,138th performance on January 25, 2002, Les Misérables became the 2nd longest running show in the history of Broadway. On May 18, 2003, the curtain finally came down with its 6,680th performance on Broadway.

The Story

This is the pedigree of the musical that has made its reappearance on Broadway, albeit for a short duration. Les Misérables, based on Victor Hugo’s epic novel, has been adapted and directed by Trevor Nunn and John Caird, with music by Claude-Michel Schonberg. It is a story based during the turbulent days of revolution in France.

It is a story, spanning decades, about a policeman – Javert, who relentlessly pursues an escaped convict - Jean Valjean. Valjean, under an assumed name - Monsieur Madeleine, becomes the Mayor and promises to bring up the daughter – Cosette – of a dying prostitute – Fantine. Javert suspects that the Mayor is actually Valjean, and the Mayor confesses but makes his escape. During the chaos of the revolution, Javert is exposed as a police spy, and on being given a chance to kill him, Valjean lets him go. This changes Javert’s mind toward Valjean.

This is a heart rending story, and a must see for all. Now that a second chance has come your way, do not let it go by.
