Passing Strange
OFF-BROADWAY HIT TRANSFERS TO BROADWAY! This off-Broadway breakout new musical is set to begin previews on February 8, 2008 at the Belasco Theatre and is set for an official start date of February 28, 2008. Passing Strange played an extended engagement at the Public Theatre this past summer and was a success with both audiences and critics. The New York Times said of this show, “Fresh, exuberant, bracingly inventive, bitingly funny, and full of heart.” The entire off-Broadway cast will transfer to Broadway so while the musical may be new to the Great White Way all the kinks will certainly be worked out. This is a moving, powerful and hysterically funny tale of a young black bohemian on an exploration of life. The journey takes him from his middle-class, church going youth in Los Angeles to Amsterdam, Berlin and back again. He observes and learns many things (some good, some not so good) along the way including the happenings in the sometimes shady world of the music industry i.e. sex, drugs and rock and roll. This trip changes him in ways he never thought possible. The book and lyrics for this production were written by critically-acclaimed singer and songwriter Stew who was commissioned by the Public Theatre to develop this innovative new show. The music was written by Stew and his longtime musical collaborator Heidi Rodewall. Before hitting the stage Stew won two “Album of the Year Awards” from Entertainment Weekly for “Guest Host” and “The Naked Dutch Painter” and recently composed an original song for the popular cartoon “Spongebob Square Pants”. The score is both witty and soulful and includes such Stew songs as “Love Like That”, “Come Down Now” and “Key/It’s Alright”. Passing Strange is a thought provoking story of a man trying to find his way in life. At the end of his long journey he discovers that what we learn from within is what really counts. This fresh, inventive show is one that even a “non-musical” fan of Broadway can enjoy. Come see why the New York Post said, “The burgeoning relationship between musical theatre and rock ‘n’ roll – so successfully explored last season with Spring Awakening gets a further nudge with Passing Strange.” Passing Strange TicketsPassing Strange tickets are selling from the box office for between $26.50 - $111.50 with premium seating to sold out shows tickets costing slightly more.
