OLD-FASHIONED MURDER MYSTERY This original musical comedy debuted in February of 2007 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. It is a backstage murder mystery that stars David Hyde Pierce and Debra Monk. The show centers on a Broadway bound musical’s opening night out of town tryout in which the talentless lead actress mysteriously dies during her curtain call. Curtains is a tribute to the quirky 1950’s style murder/who done it mysteries. The production is set in 1959 Boston during the opening night of Robbin’ Hood! (a western style musical version of the classic Robin Hood tale). It is literally “curtains” for the main diva and the productions entire cast including the producer, songwriters, director, actors, understudy and stage manager are all suspects. Each, of course, has a motive that must be sorted out by the local stage struck detective. Lieutenant Frank Cioffi who is an avid musical theater fan allows the company to continue rehearsals while he conducts his backstage investigation. Cioffi, a good cop, wants desperately to solve the murder, but in the process becomes enthralled with wanting the show to become a hit. He quickly finds himself in the middle of theatrical divas and egos, more murders and a love affair. He also finds it necessary to interject his opinion in changing certain aspects of the script. This production marks the last musical collaboration by one of the most brilliant and longest running songwriting teams in Broadway history; composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb. Some of their other shows include Cabaret, Chicago, Kiss of the Spider Woman and Woman of the Year. Ebb died in 2004. Rupert Holmes provides the shows book. In 1986 Holmes earned three Tony awards for his musical Mystery of Edwin Drood and he is also known for penning the classic pop tune “The Pina Colada Song.” The cast includes David Hyde Pierce, in the role of the lieutenant, who is best known for his eleven year run as Niles Crane on the hit NBC sitcom Fraiser. He also starred on Broadway in Monty Python’s Spamalot, The Heidi Chronicles and Beyond Therapy. Pierce’s comedic timing and sharp dialogue is a true asset to the play. The show also features Tony award winner Debra Monk whose Broadway credits include Chicago, Company and Prelude to a Kiss among others. Curtains is coming to Broadway after a successful world-premiere in Los Angeles where it had critics raving. “Curtains and David Hyde Pierce are a match made in musical-theater heaven…” boasts Evan Henderson of the L.A. Daily News and Charles McNulty of the Los Angeles Times said, “Curtains, in a brilliantly directed production by Scott Ellis, does what musicals rarely do anymore; entertain…” This is one of those musicals that come along once every so often; it’s funny, has a strong plot, likable characters and a perfectly cast ensemble. This is the spring season’s must see show!
