Based on Puccini’s La Bohème, the show is a Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award, winner. The Broadway production is credited with bringing to the fore, contrary to the then-existing traditionally conservative theater scene, controversial topics countering the then-prevalent culture. It is also credited with making the musicals popular with the younger generation. One of the first musicals on Broadway to feature gay, bisexual, lesbian, and transgender characters, Rent also brought in an ethnically diverse cast, including racial minorities, in its leading roles.

This successful musical on Broadway was nominated for 10 categories of Tony Awards in 1996, and won four of them: Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical – Jonathan Larson, Best Original Score – Jonathan Larson, Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical – Wilson Jermaine Heredia. It was also nominated for 10 categories for the Drama Desk Awards and won 6 categories. In addition, the New York City hit show won the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, as well as two 1996 Theater World Awards for Outstanding New Talent – Adam Pascal and Daphne Rubin-Vega.

The Story Profile

Though based on Puccini’s La Bohème, Jonathan Larson’s Rent has been relocated to the era of AIDS, in East Village, New York. This is the story of a penniless songwriter, whose love for a young woman never diminishes, even as illness increasingly consumes her. It is the story of the poet Rodolfo – now a punk rocker. It is the story of a dancer at an S&M; nightclub – Mimi – who is tubercular, and now is also AIDS-infected. It is the story of Marcello, a painter aspiring to be a filmmaker. It is the story of love, striving to endure beyond all obstacles.

Finally, it is a story worth spending time to see.

Getting the Best Seats to Rent

The good news is the show has been around long enough that the demand isn’t what it used to be. This also means there should be tickets that are affordable and provide a good location. When it comes to anything theater, having the best seat is key. By using the listings above it will be up to you when it comes to finding the best seats. A better seat will go a long way when at a show like this. Look center, but don’t shy away from the aisles sides of the outer sections. These could provide a price drop while still giving you a nice view of the stage. You can also save and seek center balcony seats. A bit further, but having a center seat will make the experience and memories wonderful.
